Catalogue Note

A well-travelled artist, Willem Dooijewaard produced striking creations that serve as an alluring documentation of his adventures around the world. A North African Woman Reading portrays a lady reclining comfortably on a bed, engrossed in her book.

Though she is partly in the nude, the resplendent woman retains a flamboyant aura. Ornamented with fine jewelry and striking head gear, she exudes an effortless radiance. A cascading, yellow textile draped over her lower body at once obscure her thighs while also revealing their shape. Her sinuous curves are further highlighted by the blue drapery on which she lays. An overarching, jewel-like light blankets the present lot, accentuated with masterfully rendered shadows, revealing the artist’s affinity for impressionism.

Painted prior to the onset of brutal North African dictatorships, Dooijewaard offers a glimpse into a decidedly different epoch, an echo of a relatively tranquil and prosperous chapter in the chronicles of North African history.
