sostegno in forma di trofeo militare con un'armatura sormontata da scudi, armi e stendardi, un pendente con fiori, ghirlande ai lati, il piano aggiunto impiallacciato in diaspro di Sicilia e verde antico

Condition

Please note the console's depth is 64cm and not 84cm as indicated on the catalogue. Console: The guiding is weathered and there is wood worming, both normal for the age. The wooden frame of the top has a missing part of 2.5 cm on the front left corner and of 10 cm on the right back corner. Front: The curl below the top, on the left, is reattached. A crack on the lower part of the shield which extends to the shoulders and the belly of the armor. Small losses to the fringe underneath the armor and an horizontal crack on the left side of the base. Right side: The flower has petals missing. A crack on the shield, on the flag and on the fringe below. Minor loss of the gilding on the edge of the gun mouth. Left side: The swag is restored; losses of gilding on the tips of the spear and the ax. A crack on the flag and the helm; another crack on the left side of the base. Back: The base has cracks and chips on the edge. The central trunk element has a vertical crack from top to bottom. Marble top: The marble top was added in a later date. Several cracks on the Sicilian jasper, filled with stucco. The edge's side has some segments and triangles of verde antico marble which have been substituted and restored.

Catalogue Note

Un tavolo romano composto da una corazza e altri strumenti bellici, in una raccolta privata, è citato da A. Gonzàlez-Palacios in Arredi e Ornamenti alla Corte di Roma, Milano 2004, p. 100.
La corazza che centra il sostegno di questa rara console trova molteplici punti di contatto con le due corazze con elmo in legno scolpito, dipinto e dorato, in collezione privata, che A. Gonzàlez-Palacios data al secolo XVII-XVIII (op. cit., p. 100) mettendole in rapporto con la coppia di torciere della chiesa di S. Maria della Vittoria a Roma, nelle quali delle palme si intrecciano bizzarramente ad un'armatura, seguendo quasi alla lettera un progetto che Giovanni Giardini pubblicò in Disegni diversi, Roma, 1714 (vedi A. Gonzàles-Palacios, op. cit., p. 101).
