Literature

"Lombardo del '600; Giulio Cesare Procacini," in Collezzioni private bergamasche, III, Monumenta Bergomensia LX, Bergamo 1982, reproduced pl. 800 (as Lombard, 17th Century, Giulio Cesare Procaccini);
F. Frangi in D. Pescarmona (ed.), Giuseppe Vermiglio, un pittore caravaggesco tra Roma e Lombardia, exhibition catalogue, Milan 2000, p. 65 and p. 76, note 30, reproduced p. 66, fig. 41 (as Vermiglio).

Condition

A fairly recent glue relining is firm and stable. Overall the paint surface has been very well retained, detail in the figure is very good and the image is strong. There is some pressing in the flesh tones where the pattern of the canvas is apparent, but this is not too distracting. Examination under UV light reveals some retouches of differing ages. There are some older retouches under the old varnish in the background to left of the Magdalene's head that appear to address an old tear, and another older area on hand at lower left. There are possibly others in the dark background, but it is difficult to tell. A more recent retouch can be seen in background at center left and another at extreme lower left corner.
