Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This picture is in excellent condition with most of the defects residing in the gilded background rather than the painted figures. Retouching primarily focuses on wear in the gold ground surrounding Christ's torso, with some reinforcement of the contours of Christ's body. Small losses in the flanking figures and at the base and apex of the cross have been addressed with "neutral" astrazione cromatica while small areas of wear in St John's face have been retouched with a more mimetic approach. The varnish is even and quite glossy. The support displays a very mild lateral warp. On the back, remnants of the original gesso are extant.
