Description

  • Portrait of a man in black
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The canvas has an old glue relining and is stable on its stretcher. The darks have sunk a little into the background, as visible in the catalogue image, but the face of the sitter remains crisp and clear beneath a slightly yellowed varnish. The slightly milky varnish makes a reading under UV somewhat difficult however some sensitive retouching to the craquelure in the face is visible and more concentrated feathered retouching in the shadows of the face, the hair and the collar beside the cravat. Some of the retouching in the face has discolored very slightly. These could be addressed if preferred but are not distracting as they are. Otherwise the painting requires no further work and is ready to hang. Offered unframed.
