Catalogue Note

Similar in style to the character portraits executed and popularised by Cochin and Saint Aubin, Danloux has successfully employed the stumping technique to produce a broad range of tones, creating subtle variations of light and dark effects across the figure.  This portrait appears to have been drawn in London, after the artist fled there in 1791, following the Revolution.
