Catalogue Note

In its great stylistic freedom, this drawing, executed solely in pen and ink, can be closely compared with a group of at least fourteen sheets by Giandomenico depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.1  These are all drawn in the same technique, characterized by closely hatched lines used to define the areas of shade, and a total absence of the shading washes that Giandomenico more usually employed.  The present drawing does not seem to be connected to any painted works, but can be considered a relatively early work, executed circa 1760, the dating suggested by Byam Shaw for the related group of drawings of scenes from the Passion.2  When it was last sold, in 1977, Byam Shaw pointed out that elements of this composition are closely paralleled in Tiepolo's etching of The Stoning of Saint Stephen, inscribed Joannes Domenicus Tiepolo/invenit pinxit et deliniavit.3
