Catalogue Note
This previously unknown study is preparatory for the figure of 'Fortune' in a composition by Reni that is known from two autograph variants and several copies. The first of Reni's images, showing Fortune holding a purse, was executed for the Abbot Gavotti, and is now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Rome (fig. 1). The second, depicting Fortune holding a crown, is in an American private collection.1 Both versions are dated by Stephen Pepper to 1637, providing a terminus ante quem for the present sheet, which must have been executed in preparation for the first version. Stylistically, this drawing is closely comparable with a similar but slightly later sheet in the Uffizi, Florence,2 a study of a female nude, executed in the same media and also on blue paper, which is preparatory for the figure of a Bacchant 'Ubriachezza' in Reni's 1639 painting, Bacchus and Ariadne, now lost but known from several copies.
