Description
- Luca Giordano
- A study of Moses kneeling with his arms upraised and a further subsidiary study of his right arm
- Pen and brown ink, point of the brush and brown wash and red chalk
Condition
Laid down on paper. The sheet has been partially made up in the upper left corner and lower left edge, before being laid down. There is a small hole to the left foot of Moses and a small repaired tear by his right arm. The sheet has somewhat discolored and there are areas of surface dirt and light brown staining throughout. There is a narrow band of discoloration to the right edge and a small area where the sheet is showing signs of abrasion on Moses' left thigh. The medium is still relatively strong throughout.

Catalogue Note
This previously unknown drawing does not appear to be preparatory for any known painting by Giordano, but stylistically it seems close to works from the artist's Spanish period, and possibly dates from the 1690s.
