Exhibited

London, The Fine Art Society, John Cecil Stephenson 1889-1965, 18th October - 8th November 2007, cat. no.16.

Condition

The canvas has been fully laid down on to a supporting board. There is a small spot of loss to the lower left hand side of the bottom edge, most probably in line with a previous framing, and a few tiny further traces visible elsewhere. There are a few fine lines of craquelure and areas of reticulation visible to the work. Elsewhere there is minor surface dirt and possible slight flattening to some of the raised elements of thicker impasto, but this excepting the work appears in very good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals areas of fluorescence and probable retouching to areas within the black in the top half of the composition, which have been very sensitively executed, together with further traces which appear in keeping with the nature of the artist's materials. Housed in a thick white painted frame. Please contact the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
