Gifted by the above to Barbara Bagenal, and thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Original canvas. The canvas undulates slightly, and there are several pinholes apparent along the left vertical edge, but otherwise the canvas appears sound. There are some minor frame abrasions around the edges of the canvas. There are some fine scattered lines of craquelure in places, and one or two areas of very minor reticulation. There are a couple of spots of loss to the green dress of the girl on the right, with one or two spots of lifting elsewhere. There is some light surface dirt across the work and a spot of detritus above the signature in the lower right corner with some additional uneveness to the paint surface. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish layer. There are no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching. The work is presented in an ornate gilt frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
