[Toledo, Juan Varela de Salamanca pour le Monastère de San Pedro Martir, 1509-1510.]
- ink on paper
Bifolio (295 x 430 mm).
"Although these have disappeared except for a few copies, they were printed in enormous numbers and must have formed a large part by bulk of the printing output of the period" (Norton, Printing..., p. 6).

Norton, A Descriptive Catalogue of Printing in Spain & Portugal, Cambridge, 1978, 1075, état B avec les espaces blancs (notre exemplaire décrit), p. 386-387. – Martin Abad, Post-incunables Ibéricos, Madrid, 2001, p. 157-158, mentionne notre exemplaire connu de Norton, 270-B. – A. S. Wilkinson, Iberian Books: Books Published in Spanish Or Portuguese Or on the Iberian Peninsula before 1601 ..., Leiden, Boston, 2010, p. 229-230, n° 6078.

Note autographe signée de F. J. Norton à Laurence Witten, Libreria antiquaria, Southport, Conn., USA , jointe à l'exemplaire :
Indulgence : this, as you suspect, is a standard type of Cruzada indulgence, printed at Toledo (monastery of St Peter Martyr) in the types of Juan Varela (previously working at Gra[nada] and Seville). All these indulgences had to be printed either at To[ledo] or at Valladolid (in abeyance at this time), whether they were in Spanish or in Catalan. Diego (de Ribera), the bishop of Majorca, signed the indulgence in his capacity as a royally appointed commissary for the Bull of the Cruzade – a national not merely a local function. The late Albert Ehrman had an interesting variant with exactly the setting of types as yours except for the last line of the maint text where the blank date spaces are printed in with the worded date 21 January 1509 (non = 9) and the place (the location of the Bishop’s palace a Vall de Musse added. This copy has no recipients name inserted, and I suspect that the printed date and place were an error which was removed, but it is possible that this was a special issue for use in Majorca only on the date mentioned. The Casa del Libro has a copy of your issue with the MS. Date May 1511. Your date is 9 March 1510. I have one with a wafer attached ready for use but the blanks blank. There is another at Montserrat.
The proofs I mentioned above are of my Descriptive catalogue of printing in Spain and Portugal, 1501-1520, whose eventual appearance was hinted at in the preface to Printing in Spain. It is hoped to publish next year. You will receive a prospectus in due course.
Mr Harrison showed me your letter. I should have liked to have had the pleasure of meeting you at the Book Fair but another batch of proofs is due. I should explain that I retired from the University Library in 1972 but still retain a corner [?] there.
With best wishes, yours sincerely. F. J. Norton
