the smooth surface of the fine grained stone juxtaposed with sharp contours twisting around an irregular central opening suggesting entrance into a heavenly grotto, the reverse incised in kaishu with verses by Su Shi and a seal reading qian an ('handsome hut'), wood stand

Catalogue Note

Translated, the poem by Su Shi reads: 
'There is no springtime on Western Mountain,
     the cliff clings stubbornly to the clouds.
Leaning as a wall into the sky,
     with not a forest in sight.'
