Catalogue Note
Born in Japan, Yoneda Tomoko is a transnational artist currently living and working in London. Her pursuit of both journalism and photographic studies in the US and UK has led her to rigorously explore social histories, as well as to create imagery that emphasizes the dichotomy between the objective and subjective. As part of her Topological Analogies series, Heat I (lot 2913) and Wallpaper I (lot 2801) are early works taken in 1996 in East London buildings that were scheduled to be demolished. Capturing stains and peeled wallpaper from the city's walls, Yoneda's photographs document the invisible traces of human presence and the warmth of the vacated homes. Her images invite us to take part in the never-ending dialogue between past and present. Yoneda's works are currently in the collections of private and public institutions around the world, including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, National Museum of Art, Osaka, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
