Catalogue Note
In 1952 Inoue Yu-ichi co-founded the Bokujin-kai group, which sought to liberate calligraphy from its deeply rooted conventions and ignite its pictorial potential. By the 1960s, Yu-ichi received international acclaim for his bold calligraphic single-character paintings through his contribution to Documenta II in Kassel in 1959 and participation in notable exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art, Stedelijk Museum, and Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. The present lot depicts Yama, the character for mountain, in a physically gestural and multi-tonal ink brushstroke. Created in 1966, this painting is representative of Yu-ichi’s mid-career style—exhibiting a sophisticated texture of ink with tonal gradients and trailing brush marks. In contrast to both his earlier works and later paintings from the 1980s, the reduction of control from his brush and the reveal of involuntary splashes of ink illustrate the ongoing narrative between artist and medium that Yu-ichi desired to exploit. An example of this contrast between thick, controlled application of ink and subtle ink wash tonalities is also evident in the works by Yu-ichi’s Bokujin-kai co-founder and mentor Morita Shiryu in this sale (lots 2820 & 2921).
