Catalogue Note
In April 1869, Baker was appointed governor-general of the equatorial Nile basin by the Khedive Isma'il, making him the first European to take high-office under the Egyptian government. This work describes his extremely difficult and eventful journeys to and around the region, during which he had to contend with not only the terrian but the hostility of the slave-traders, who fought several battles against him and the Khedive's troops under his command.
