Catalogue Note

The sitter in this work is traditionally identified as Adele, the American wife of Jules Guillemet, a well-known dress shop owner and a friend of the artist. Both Adele and her husband were painted by Manet on several occasions. A pastel version of this image, entitled Le Repos, was sold at auction in the mid-1980s for an impressive $550,000. Another related portrait hangs in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
