Catalogue Note

Kloster und Ätna captures the atmospheric view of the Dominican monastery San Domenico near Taormina in Sicily. Taormina, perched on a rocky promontory at the foot of Mount Etna looks over the Mediterranean Sea and has attracted visitors for centuries. In 1904 and 1905, Emil and his wife spent time in the region, hoping the climate would be beneficial for Alda's poor health.

Nolde was fascinated by the beauty of the landscape, painting a series of pictures of Taormina and the surrounding areas. The present work, with its lush colors and sunny sky, displays the prominent influence of Post-Impressionism on Nolde's own work. Like the Impressionists, Nolde attempted to capture atmosphere through his use of strong colors and by applying paint with bold brushstrokes, creating his signature impasto. Having been used to the light in Denmark and Northern Germany, the overwhelming sunshine in Italy undoubtedly had an overwhelming effect on the artist's perception of the Mediterranean. A stunning celebration of the Sicilian landscape and it's heritage, Kloster und Ätna reflects Nolde's mood upon creation as well as his gratitude of nature, aesthetic beauty, and classical history.
