Condition

The board is stable. There is a layer of milky varnish preventing UV light from fully penetrating, however, UV examination reveals a few small, scattered spots of retouching to the background as well as a small spot of retouching to the thick white impasto. There are three flecks of paint loss to the lower right quadrant as visible in the catalogue illustration. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

Oiseau en cage was originally owned by the architect Jean-Charles Moreux, who designed a series of celebrated homes in France in a predominately Classicist style. Amongst these were a private auditorium for the musician Wanda Landowska, a studio for the sculptor Robert Couturier and a Parisian hôtel particulier for Baron Robert Rothschild.
