Catalogue Note

On 8th March 1957, René Magritte was elected member of the Libre Académie de Belgique, which had been founded by Edmond Picard in 1901 in opposition to the official Académie Royale de Belgique. Its aim was to defend the rights of all those engaged in the arts, and members were made up of lawyers and artists alike. An award was presented annually and Magritte is reported to have given a painting to each of the joint winners Ravey and Domani, the founders of the Théàtre de Poche, in 1956. The present work commemorates the occasion and is dated 1957, the year of Magritte’s election.
