Literature
Robert P. Welsh, Catalogue Raisonné of the Naturalistic Works (until early 1911), vol. I, New York, 1998, no. A140, illustrated p. 212 (with dimensions 203/8 by 161/8 in.)
Condition
The media are pastel and charcoal on paper. The work is in good overall condition. The sheet is an irregular shape, with inwardly curved edges and truncated corners. The sheet is hinged at three points along the top of the sheet verso. There are hard creases which form a rectangle: this rectangle matches the edge of the picture plane as seen when the work is in its current matting. Along the left-hand crease there is reinforcing tape, verso, and in places along the other creases well. There are some losses and nicks to the edges of the sheet (outside the picture plane as delineated by the creases and not visible in the current matting.) There is a 3 in. horizontal tear just below the top hard crease. There is some dried black paint on some of the extreme edges of the sheet. There is a very minor faint brown discoloration by her proper left eyebrow. The back of the sheet shows some acidic staining. The media are very strong and fresh and the work presents very well.
