Condition
The medium is oil on canvas, not lined. Not examined out of its frame. The work is in very good overall condition. The surface has retained its impasto, the colors are strong. There is some very minor surface dirt throughout. There is a pinhead size loss in the center about 1.5 inches below the visible edge. There are some small losses along the upper left edge by the corner, associated with frame rubbing and some minor pulling in the upper left corner. The work is lightly painted along the edges and in some spots throughout. Under UV light there is no apparent inpainting. The work presents very well.

Catalogue Note
Paul Madeline was a master at painting the French landscape, particularly La Creuse and Brittany, the location of the present work. Madeline was born in Paris and studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts. As a young man, he worked in publishing to support himself, and predominantly painted the Parisian cityscape. In 1894 he discovered the picturesque region of La Creuse, inspiring him to concentrate on rural landscapes and natural settings. He showed his works several times at various Salons in France, and repeatedly won honorable mentions for his work, eventually being named a permanent member of the Salon d'automne. His work was well received and by 1902 he was earning enough to live comfortably only from his painting. In 1908 he founded La société moderne with fellow artists Henri Lebasque, Paul Emile Chabas and Jean Francois Rafaëlli.
