Catalogue Note
Founded in an ancient city with hundreds of years of history, Patek Philippe, as Geneva's oldest independent family-owned watch manufacturer, values tradition and lineage like no other. To celebrate its 175th anniversary, the brand has decided to glorify the very city that nurtures and cultivates it through time.
Ref. 5089 ‘The Escalade Festivities’ was launched in a limited edition series to commemorate a historic night in the year 1602, when the people of Geneva repelled an attack by the Duke of Savoy. According to legend, on that fateful night in a cold December winter when the city of Geneva was asleep, the forces of the Duke attempted to launch a surprise strike scaling over the city wall. A woman named Catherine Cheynel (or the Genevan so dearly nicknamed Mère Royaume later) seized a large cauldron of hot soup and poured it outside the window on the attackers, alerting and awaking the whole town, hence deterring the attack. As a reminiscence of this event, a special chocolate pot stuffed with candies is ceremonially consumed every year as celebrations. The annual 3-day event, called Escalade Festivities, includes horseback brigades in the Old City of Geneva, costumed parades and folk music, where Genevans pays tributes to this victory day and the valiant defence of their ancestors 400 years ago.
The heroic act of Mère Royaume was then captured by the Patek Philippe’s enamellist on cloisonné enamel dial on a hand-engraved background, showcasing her extraordinary bravery and wit. Limited to only 40 pieces, the rarity of this reference is comparable to the highly sought-after Ref. 5131/175G-001 Geneva Harbor Worldtime model. This is the first time Ref. 5089 has ever been offered in auction market.
