Catalogue Note
Patek Philippe's 175th anniversary is celebrated with the creation of limited-edition commemorative pieces, including the Multi-Scale Chronograph wristwatch Ref 5975. As a Multi-Scale Chronograph, it features three logarithmic scales: the tachymeter, for computation of speed; the telemeter, for distance; finally the pulsometer, for heartbeats per minute. Beyond its obvious utility, this type of design has unique historical significance. Most popular during the Second World War, it qualifies the Ref. 5975 as an important testament to the historical heritage of the 21st-century man.
The nature of Ref. 5975 is identifiable not only by its aesthetic merit, but also by its CH 28-520 movement that was developed explicitly for this watch. Technical sophistication at its peak, this self-winding movement consists of a classic column wheel which confers control over the start and stop functions, and an effectively zero-friction disk clutch that empowers the sweep chronograph hand to be a permanently running seconds hand. Building on this, the movement also provides the force for an awe-inspiring 21500 vibrations per hour and a minimum of 50 hours of power reserve. As an evidence of its technical finesse, the movement is graced with the prestigious Patek Philippe Seal. This recognizes not only the maximum level of finishing that it possesses, but also the near-perfect accuracy of its movement and the impeccable precision of the results displayed on its three logarithmic scales.
True to Patek Philippe’s vision of quality over quantity, only 400 pieces of 5975R has ever been released. The imminent debut of pink gold version of Ref 5975 on the auction floor of Sotheby's will doubtless create the most violent upheaval in world of watch collection.
