Condition
The oak group shows good carving and modelling of details, in particular Marie Jacobé's face and hat, as well as the drapery of the dresses. The surface of the group appears to be stripped with remains of polychromy and worming at some places.
Mary's proper left hand, as well as fingertips of her right hand missing. The fourth Child missing, his left foot can be sen on the terreasse. The edges of the terrasse with an indistinct inscription.

Catalogue Note
Ce groupe représente Marie-Jacobé - ou Marie Clopas -, fille d'Anne et demi-soeur de Marie, enseignant la lecture à ses quatre enfants. Un fragment de pied visible à la droite du groupe est le seul élément restant du quatrième enfant aujourd'hui disparu. Iconographie très répandue dans le nord de l'Europe, ce groupe faisait certainement partie d'un retable dédié à la Parenté de Sainte Anne, comme le retable de Sainte Anne d'Auderghem aux musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, où les personnages sont superposés dans un encadrement architectural flamboyant créant un style très narratif. Ces sujets intimistes, minutieusement sculptés et destinés à la dévotion privée, décrivant avec grande attention les traits du visage et les détails du costume comme la grande toque recouverte d'un voile coiffant sa tête, et la robe aux manches bouffantes et aux plis accentués.
