Condition

Overall good original condition. The patinated bronze surfaces presents with the original matte patina, with occasional light surface scratches, a few surface flecks and minor surface dirt concentrated to the recessed portions of the design and consistent with age and gentle handling. The base is original and presents with a dark grey color, more nuanced than in the catalogue illustration. The marble with some surface scratches and several chips, partially visible in the catalogue illustration. The back of the base with the most important chip along the upper edge, approximately 4 3/4 x 1 in. An element has been reattached to the proper left back edge of the base, which could be professionally restored if one wishes to. Please contact the department for additional photographs of the sculpture. An extraordinary example of a lifetime cast sculpture by Csaky, which epitomizes his reflection on forms and volumes and his transition from abstract cubism to a more figurative sculpture.

Catalogue Note

The present lot was previously in the collection of Paulo and Marinette Prado. Paulo Prado, an art patron and businessman, came from one of Brazil’s wealthiest families, which owned the largest coffee plantation in Sao Paulo. He married the French Marie Lebrun and while living in Paris they met many artists and intellectuals of the time, including Blaise Cendrars, whom they invited to visit Brazil in 1924. They were also influential supporters of the arts in Brazil, contributing to the development of a modern aesthetic.
