Catalogue Note

According to Stuart Frank, Senior Curator Emeritus of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Director Emeritus of the Kendall Whaling Museum, "a first-hand, non-invasive examination may confirm that the patriotic portrait of Lady Liberty with Liberty Pole, Liberty Cap, and an ensemble of American Flags with shield, is the work of William Sizer (1801-1840), the so-called L.C. Richmond Artist. See Stuart Frank, Scrimshaw and Provenance: A Third Dictionary of American Scrimshaw Artists, 2013.
