Catalogue Note
The initials CR are those of Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), wife of George III, and the Garter motto, crest and royal coronet are for one of her sons.
For other, similar vessels bearing the mark of William Hall (sometimes attributed to William Holmes) have been noted, including a silver-gilt tankard, 1801, engraved with the badge of the Prince of Wales (Christie’s South Kensington, lot 345), 11 June 2013; and ten silver-gilt beakers, 1801/02, engraved with the Garter motto, royal crest and motto (Sotheby’s, London, 20 February 1986, lots 91-93).
