Catalogue Note

The original ‘Minerva’ bowl or krater, measuring 31.8cm. over handles, was discovered by chance on 17 October 1868 among the so-called ‘Hildesheim Treasure’ of ancient Roman silver at Hildesheim, Germany. The bowl, considered to have been among the best of the 70 or so items comprising the cache, was lost in 1945. What remains of the treasure is now in the Altes Museum, Berlin.
