Catalogue Note
The swags of vine leaves and grapes on this pair of vases relate them to designs by François Joseph Belanger (1744-1818), and are seen on a larger vase formerly in the collection of Louis Marie Augustin, Duc d’Aumont (1709-1782) and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1971.206.44). In the 1770s the duke had established a lapidary workshop at Versailles, with Bélanger – an architect and designer - as the artistic director.
