Catalogue Note
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot places the present work just outside the walls of a medieval chateau in Beaune-la-Rolande. Through the 1850s Corot completed two versions of the composition, later returning to the motif in the 1870s (Robaut 757-760). Painted en plein air, the present work and its other variations demonstrate the artist’s interest in subtle, yet significant, tonal shifts that suggest changing light. The pearlescent greys of glassy water meet almost imperceptible pink tints within the white of the ancient walls to recreate a specific, fleeting, moment of the sun’s reflection.
Beaune la Rolande. Le château de la Motte-Bastille was once in the collection of England’s Alexander Young whose contemporary collection of Corots was of such a scale it rivalled many in France. By the time Young’s collection was sold in 1910, the present work joined forty other examples by the artist.
