Catalogue Note
A RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY THE FOUNDER OF MARYLAND. George Calvert (1579-1632) achieved considerable political success under James I, culminating in his appointment as Secretary of State in 1619. In this role he was responsible for the interminable discussions over a Spanish match for Prince Charles and he resigned after this policy collapsed in 1624. He was, however, created Lord Baltimore and remained a Privy Councillor. Calvert was deeply involved in colonisation projects: in 1623 he received a charter to found a colony in Newfoundland, but this collapsed and by 1630 he was back in London petitioning the King to grant him a tract of land along the Chesapeake Bay opposite Virginia. The Colony of Maryland received its royal charter five weeks after Baltimore's death in 1632. WE HAVE NO RECORD OF ANY AUTOGRAPH MATERIAL BY THE FIRST LORD BALTIMORE HAVING BEEN SOLD AT AUCTION FOR AT LEAST FORTY YEARS.
