A RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY THE FOUNDER OF MARYLAND. George Calvert (1579-1632) achieved considerable political success under James I, culminating in his appointment as Secretary of State in 1619. In this role he was responsible for the interminable discussions over a Spanish match for Prince Charles and he resigned after this policy collapsed in 1624. He was, however, created Lord Baltimore and remained a Privy Councillor. Calvert was deeply involved in colonisation projects: in 1623 he received a charter to found a colony in Newfoundland, but this collapsed and by 1630 he was back in London petitioning the King to grant him a tract of land along the Chesapeake Bay opposite Virginia. The Colony of Maryland received its royal charter five weeks after Baltimore's death in 1632.
