Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 6 December 1972, lot 70 (as Francesco Solimena; incorrectly described as 'Juno and Paris').

Condition

The canvas has a rather firm relining, the paint surface is quite dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching, most concentrated in the lower left corner and on the lower margin. There is also retouching in the face of the putto, left, and in the mountain, centre right. In overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

The monumental prototype for this painting is in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, with its pendant, depicting Sophonisba receiving the cup of poison, painted between 1704 and 1712.1
