Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Italian, 16th Century

Condition

There is evidence of past worming, this has led to some losses, notably to the Virgin's proper right arm and proper left forearm and hand; there are further small losses around the base at the bottom, to four fingers of the Child's proper right hand, and to the Virgin's veil on the proper left side. There is residue or varnish visible in areas, in particular around the Virgin's arms. The Child is carved separately and attached to the Virgin with a hook at the back. The Child is carved in sections and joints are visible at the shoulders and the proper right thumb. There are small losses to the gilding and the polychromy throughout; it is possible that some of the gilding and polychromy have been refreshed. Otherwise the condition is good, with minor dirt and wear consistent with age. The later wood base is in good condition with some general wear.
