Description
- Mattia Preti
- A cavarly skirmish
- oil on canvas
- 93 x 131 cm
Condition
The canvas has recently been cleaned, relined and restored. The paint surface is in reasonably good overall condition, but has suffered some natural wear in parts, notably the sky. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a large diagonal repaired area c.25 by 6 cm. of damage in the upper right hand corner, but part from this, restoration seems to be limited to selective local retouchings, many for example around the principal dark bay horse and its rider and the corpses beneath. The varnish is thick and glossy and prevents closer inspection, but the painting will not require any further attention.
Offered in a plain gilt wood frame, numerous minor chips and losses.
