Catalogue Note
After studying at Brighton College of Art and then Slade School of Art, Johnson went on to teach at Brighton Polytechnic. Whilst working in Africa, lecturing at the University of Benin, Nigeria, he took time to explore and draw inspiration from the ethnic and tribal arts of the West African region, especially the wooden and bronze sculptures of the Yoruba and Ife tribes of Nigeria.
