From Magritte to Indiana: An Italian collection

Only an expert eye can bring together such varied works united by their aesthetic quality and their historical interest.  This exceptional collection exists thanks to the perceptiveness of Italian collectors. It includes the great masters of the 20th century such as Georges Braque, Max Ernst, René Magritte and Marc Chagall alongside their Italian peers Gino Severini, Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi. However contemporary art is also present with a series of sculptures by Robert Indiana and works by Italian artists. We are invited to review a period that stretches from 1917 to today: from Cubism to Surrealism, from Pop Art to Joseph Kosuth’s neon works or the polychrome terracotta pieces by Bertozzi and Casoni.

Whether they be museum pieces such as Braque’s “Verre Pipe et Poire”, Gino Severini’s “La Danse de l’ours or René Magritte’s “La Femme au miroir”, or more intimate works such as Leda et le cygne by Max Ernst or the mixed technique of Raymond Hains, a common thread runs through the entire collection that reveals a precise and cultivated taste.

It is a great honour for Sotheby’s to present this Italian collection which illustrates a very personal vision of the avant-garde of over a century, as eclectic as it is refined.
