Catalogue Note

Born in the historic art centre Jinling (present day Nanjing), Xu Lele expresses her unique artistic personality by embracing traditional Chinese painting with a vivid imagination and humour from the perspective of a contemporary woman artist. In the present early work, Xu makes a signature reference to her favourite artist Chen Hongshou, the Ming dynasty master well-known for his curious figure paintings. Her delicate brushstrokes, fine-line details, and soft color palatte depict a solemn, seated figure amidst twisting branches, which are full of energy and vitality and serve as a lively visualization of the blowing wind that traps the lady with her zither in the winter.
