Catalogue Note
Konstantin Latyshev is a Moscow-based artist who first achieved public recognition in the late 1980s as a member of the performance art group The Champions of the World. After the group disbanded Latyshev changed tack and began to produce large-format pop-art paintings which often incorporate text and slogans like scenes from a comic-strip or, as in the present lot, humorous public information posters. No stranger to controversy, in 2007 the Russian authorities confiscated Putkin, a subversive pop-art portrait which conflated images of Pushkin and Putin, which was on its way to Germany for exhibition.
