Catalogue Note
Born in 1981 in Seoul, Jeong Yunkyung lives and works in London and Seoul. Blending her Asian values with Western schools of abstract painting, Jeong's artworks showcase the collision between nature and culture as well as the East and the West. Her paintings combine elements from the Eastern tradition with architectural motifs inspired by neo-Gothic buildings, with signature motifs including leaves, feathers, scales and armors. Jeong's works are landscapes in the loosest sense of the word, better understood as representations of utopia. Repetition is used to play with visual illusion, complemented by ambiguous shapes and structures that move and morph into each other.
Jeong graduated from Ewha Womans University in 2006 and ventured to London for further study. She received her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2008 and was an Associate Research Student at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2009. Jeong has received numerous international awards such as the Thread-needle Prize of Mall Galleries in UK, the Guasch Coranty International Painting Prize in Spain and the Songam Foundation Awards in Korea etc. She has exhibited in Seoul as well as London, with solo exhibitions at In-Sync, Gallery Koo in Seoul in 2015 and The Arcadian State in London, UK in 2013.
