Catalogue Note

With a grandfather who built early automobiles and parents who created sculptures, Choe U-Ram was inspired since childhood to explore primitive art forms with clay. His signature kinetic sculptures forge a path between art, science and cybernetic technology, comprising finely engineered configurations that include CPUs, motors and LEDs, etc. The captivating forms constitute an ultra-worldly, alien aesthetic that invites viewers to imagine the evolution of life forms in the future. Exploring the power of the universe and the historical evolution of nature and humanity, Choe’s goal is to maximize the movement and motion of his machine organisms, symbolizing the adaption of humanity to the environmental and technological changes.

Born in 1970, Seoul, Choe earned his BFA and MFA from the Chungang University of Seoul in the 1990’s and made his United States debut in 2006 at the Bitforms Gallery in New York. From then on he enjoyed increasing international acclaim, exhibiting at the Shanghai Biennial in 2006 and the Liverpool Biennial in 2008, etc. His artworks are collected by the Metropolitan Art Museum in Busan, the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and the Asia Society Museum in New York, among the many others.
