Condition

This work is in very good condition. Close inspection reveals scattered light and unobtrusive scuffs and scratches to various places primarily along the sides, as is to be expected due to the nature of the materials and the work's execution. There is a small and thin horizontal ding to the lateral edge of the top element. Natural wear due to age and handling can be seen along the top edge of the bottom element, where it joins with the vertical sides, at intervals throughout.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

"There is no form that can be form without meaning, quality and feeling. We even have a feeling about a rock, about anything. It's a contradiction to make a form that is meaningless. It's also impossible to express a feeling without a form. It couldn't be said or seen. Embodiment is the central effort in art, the way it gets made, very much something out of nothing. Everything happens together and exists together and does not divide because of a meaningless dichotomy."

Donald Judd, "Art and Architecture" from a Lecture at Yale University, 20 September 1983, in Judd, Complete Writings, 1987, p. 31
