Catalogue Note
The Danish-born Rudolphi distinguished himself at the Expositions of 1844 and 1849, and in 1851 at the Crystal Palace exposition, the South Kensington museum (future Victoria & Albert) purchased two of his pieces.
The offered piece should be compared with Rudolphi's inkwell and clock in the Louvre, both of which are topped by figures with pearl bodies; the inkwell also displays similar pearl and green-enameled foliage (see Anne Dion-Tenenbaum, Orfèvrerie française du XIXe siècle, nos. 117-118, pp. 234-238.)
