Catalogue Note
In the Myth of Atalanta and Meleager, King Oeneus of Calydon, Meleager’s father, makes a grave error in his duties as the officiate of the city’s harvest ceremonies by neglecting to honor the goddess Diana. Angered, Diana sends a rampaging wild boar to terrorize the Calydonian countryside, instigating a hunt that ends tragically for Meleager. This tapestry captures Oeneus’ deadly mistake, his back turned to the goddess as she descends from above, unaware of the violence to come.
