Catalogue Note

The decoration on this plate was adapted from G. D. Ehret, Plantae et Papilliones Rariores, Tab. VII, for which see Patrich Synge-Hutchinson, "G. D. Ehret's Botanical Designs on Chelsea Porcelain", Connoisseur, October 1958, figs. 18 and 19. A teabowl and a plate decorated with a similar composition are illustrated in Sally Kevill-Davies, Sir Hans Sloane's Plants on Chelsea Porcelain, pp. 112-113, figs. 26a-b, where the author quotes the Curator of the Garden at Chelsea, Philip Miller's, note on Convolvulus Indicus: "grows naturally in Jamaica. This sends out long branches, which twist about the trees and grow to a great height...The seeds should be sown upon a hot-bed in the spring... and toward the end of May they should be planted out in warm borders." A similar 'convolvulus' plate, Property from the Estate of Edith N. Kahn, was sold in these rooms, October 11, 1995, lot 363.
