Catalogue Note
The design of this tour de force is taken from a Gobelins tapestry made between 1665 and 1668 (Mobilier National, inv. GMTT 95/3) after a painting by Charles Lebrun in Versailles. It depicts the meeting of Louis XIV and Philip IV of Spain on the Island of Pheasants, June 7, 1660, for the ratification of peace and the marriage of the King of France with Maria Theresa of Austria, Infanta of Spain.
(Hermann) Simon Rosenau was born 1861 to a Jewish family in Bad Kissingen, Bavaria. He succeeded his father, Salomon Rosenau, to the business in 1892, and opened another shop a year later in Paris, which also retailed antique furniture, bronzes and tapestries. This dish appears to have stayed in the family collection until 1922 when its belongings were auctioned under article 297 of the Versailles treaty, whereby the French government reserved themselves the right to sell properties owned on French soil by German citizens to repay the war debt. Their collection was auctioned on June 1 and 2, and lot 84 describes an oval dish chased and embossed with an ambassadorial scene.

Schleissner, perhaps the most prolific Hanau maker at this time, made a large sideboard dish of the marriage ceremony of Louis XIV to Maria Theresa from this same series, The History of the King, painted by Le Brun and made into tapestries.
