Condition

The panels of both paintings are uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surfaces are dirty and the varnishes are slightly discoloured. Canal near the timber yards: there are some horizontal lines of slightly discoloured retouching in the lower sky, centre (visible in the catalogue illustration), and inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an area of retouching, less than 1 cm. wide, in the sky, centre, just above the buildings. In overall good condition. Canal with drawbridge: Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals little to no intervention, save for perhaps some light wash strengthening in the sky and minimal retouching, lower right. In overall very good condition.
