Condition

Overall, the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the gilding, particularly at the high points, including to the Virgin's proper right knee, Christ's proper left knee, and the elbows of two of the putti. There are a few scratches, including behind the Virgin's back. There is a minor casting fissure to the bottom of the relief at the centre, which is also visible on the reverse, where there are remnants of a residue. There is some tarnishing to the gilding, notably in the crevices. There is an old label and an envelope with old cataloguing information attached to the reverse with tape. The ebonised wood frame is in good condition, with some wear and dirt to the surface. It is composed of sections, and the joints on the right hand side are slightly open but stable. There are a few small chips to the inside of the frame on the right hand side. There is wear to the gilding on the inside of the frame. The modern stand is in good condition.
