Condition

An elegant chair of fine form in good restored condition. The arms and legs with multiple old marks and scratches as to be expected. The underside with four strengthening batons, the front left leg with one secure crack. The 18th century needlework upholstery, worked in wool and silk, with later repairs overall, losses, revealing exposed foundation canvas, some tinting, and cuts and joins around arm supports. Repaired hole in centre of seat.

This wonderful example of early Georgian seat furniture is illustrated in M. Harris' survey of English chairs where he notes the low open 'shepherd's crook' arms were so made to accommodate the full dresses of the period (op. cit., p. 96).
