Description
- James Pollard
- Coronation, a bay racehorse with jockey up in yellow silks on a racecourse
- signed and dated, lower right: J. Pollard. 1840
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 8 November 1995, lot 165, where acquired.
Condition
The painting has been relined, cleaned and restored. The varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet reveals two campaigns or retouching: most recently, extensive spot retouching throughout the sky, particularly in the clouds on the right, and much scarcer spot retouching in the foreground; an older campaign consists of retouching along the left, right and upper margins and a patch in the left of the foreground. Save for very few spot retouchings in the horse's flank and the jockey's leg, horse and rider remain largely untouched and this painting requires no further attention.

Catalogue Note
Coronation, by Sir Hercules out of Ruby, was owned by Mr. A.T. Rawlinson of Chadlington, Oxfordshire, and trained at Heythrop Park. Despite only a few relatively minor succesess beforehand, he won the 1841 Derby as favourite, ridden by P. Connolly. Though favourite again for the St. Leger, Coronation was beaten by Lord Westminster's Satirist and did not race again. He was retired to stud at Chadlington for a fee of twenty guineas.
